June Burrows Tonini (Baker)

1926-2022

June Burrows Tonini (Baker)

June passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Victoria Hospital, on January 6, 2022, in her 96th year. Loving wife of Aldo "Tony" for over 72 years and cherished mother of Aleta Smith of London, Velda (John) Ambrose of Toronto, Paul (Inge) Tonini of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Madeline (Don) Oldford of Cambridge & Ed (Joanne) Tonini of Charlotte, N.C.  Dear grandmother of Matt Ambrose, Rick Smith, Tony Ambrose, Jill & Adelle Tonini and Derek & Jonathan Oldford and great-grandmother of Alexandra, Mico, Sarah, Riley, Emerson, Georgia & Annelise.  Predeceased by her eight siblings:  Mildred (Edward) Fraser, Reta (Carl) Mitchell, Rhoda (Earl) O’Brien, Eva (Edwin) Scott, Ruth (Roland) DeGrosbois, Olive (Gilbert) Utas, Edward (Mildred) Baker, Doris (George) Saleski.  Fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews across Canada and in Australia.

June was a multi-talented woman who sewed beautiful clothes in her early married life, who gave pleasure to many with her lovely alto voice in the Boys & Girls Choir and St. Martin’s Church choir, and who painted prolifically over the years in watercolours, pastels, and oils, but she found a special calling in painting on fine china.  For many years she gave china painting lessons at her home and fired her students’ work in her own kiln.  She did countless hours of genealogical research on the computer for the Baker and Tonini family lines and presented the fruits of her labour to her family in binders to reference and treasure.  June was a faithful member of her Euchre group which included precious family members and life-long friends.  She had a life-long passion for reading and could often be found sitting in her blue chair, book in hand, in the family home.  After the loss of her beloved husband in 2019, she continued her love of reading in her new chair in the sunny bay window of her room at Waverley Retirement Home.

Grateful thanks to the friends and family who continued to support her through calls and visits and to the staff at Waverley for their care and attention to her needs.  Grateful thanks also to the paramedics and staff at Victoria Hospital’s Critical Care Trauma Centre for their compassionate care.

Rest peacefully with Dad in God’s loving arms
